PostHeaderIcon Best Shorts for Leg Haters (+ 25% off code)

Every girl has insecurities. A lot of us hate our legs for various reasons. On top of the fact I wish mine were more tone (something I can work on), I’ll always be unhappy about how short they are (something I can’t). Which brings us to the topic of this post – the best shorts for girls who hate their legs, and more importantly, how to wear them.  Special thanks to Judie for the suggestion and to Jess for seconding it!

The Favorite: Siwy Camilla Cut-Offs

While I’m always trying to discover the next hot pair of jeans, shorts are a little more sensitive – I find a style I like and stick with it. I got my Siwy Camilla cut-offs last summer and am convinced they are universally the best pair of denim shorts available.  I’ve seen this brand on everyone from Nicole Richie to Beyonce – needless to say, Michelle Siwy is a genius at designing for all sorts of shapes.

Two ultra-flattering tricks…

1. Order one or two sizes up. This allows extra room in the waist and thighs, so not only do you not have to worry about them riding up, you can wear them lower on your hips so they aren’t as short. Even with a looser fit, the style and shape prevents them from giving a saggy look (unless you have no butt). I can pull mine all the way on and off without unbuttoning.

2. Style with a looser top and complete with your favorite summer wedge. It’s all about tricking the eyes. A draped top will help even out the proportions and a chunky wedge will elongate your legs and add dimension to your shape. You can do flats too, of course (depends on your mood).

Available styles and where to buy:

When I started brainstorming this post, I contacted the lovely Jeanette of Manhattanite, the best boutique to shop Siwy. She generously created a special coupon code that’s good for 25% off and free shipping through this Thursday, April 16 – enter CLUTCH22 at checkout (works on all items). Prices are in the $150 range, but with the discount and free shipping, you’ll save over $40! For sizing, I went up one full size compared to my other jeans, but if you want an even looser look, try two sizes up.

Below are photos of my favorite Siwy Camilla styles available. I’m wearing the Wonder in the photos above (the model on the far right is showing a more fitted option).

Also, if you like the Camilla, but want a little more flare - check out the Billy style. They are exactly the same, but have a cool threaded detail and cost $10 more at $168 (about $125 after the discount). The style has been discontinued and Jeanette has been getting requests like crazy (some people have even offered to pay double…wow)!

Looking for something more modest?

I hit up Forever 21 this weekend and tried on a few pairs of distressed denim bermudas. I’m guessing this style will be a hit this summer. If you go up one or two sizes, you can accomplish the “shorts” version of the boyfriend jean. When mixed with a simple top and the right accessories, it’s actually quite appealing, not to mention comfortable. I don’t have them in my posession yet, but they only cost about $20 and I’m planning to pick them up soon. Here’s one way I would style them in an outfit that costs less than $40 excluding the boots:

Above:

  • Tee: F21, $4.80
  • Jewelry: F21, $16.60
  • Shorts: F21, $17.80
  • Boots: Free People, $248

P.S. This is the first time I’ve partnered with a boutique for an exclusive discount in conjunction with a specific topic on Clutch22. I would love to hear your feedback! Do you want to see more of this?

UPDATE

The code was originally valid through Saturday, April 10 but has been extended to Thursday, April 16. I also added a blurb about the Siwy Billy style.

  • Jessica says:

This is just in time for short shopping. For a leg hater like myself these shorts look like they could be just the answer (they’re extremely flattering on you btw). Thanks so much, and I think it’s a really great that you partnered for a discount.

  • JordyBee says:

Betsey J – Thanks! I’m glad you like both options! Also, thanks for linking, I’ll link back!

Jessica – Thanks for all the feedback! Good to know the code is helpful! Let me know if you end up getting any shorts!

  • najeema says:

You look great in your shorts! I don’t know why, but shorts manage to strike fear in the hearts of women who are wearing to wear skirts all summer. And that includes me.

  • Jillian says:

I like this post- and agree with Betsey J, it’s great when there are options at different price points!

  • Jess says:

Thanks for the tips! I’ll be ordering some Siwys I think… have to look good in Mex! :)

  • senpuki says:

For us fellow Recessionistas, do you have any opinion on if it makes a difference to buy jean shorts off the shelf vs. making them yourself? I’ve got a couple pairs of jeans that are (thankfully) too big and was thinking of cutting the legs off.

  • Nichelle says:

Perfect!!! Just the post I needed! I love the shorts, and I LOVE those boots. Too bad I can’t afford them right now!!

  • JordyBee says:

najeema – Thx! I hate shorts too normally. Sizing up makes a HUGE difference for me though.

Jillian – Thanks and great to hear the different price points are helpful.

Jess – Yay for you! I know they’ll look hot on you – perfect for your trip! I can’t wait to tell Jeanette!

  • Jules says:

I was thinking whether to buy a pair of Siwy shorts after almost every celeb got a pair, but wasn’t sure about the size so this is awesome help. Also love the shorts with a flowy top :)

ps I’ve put you on my fave blog list on my blog as well, really love the way you put outfits together :)

  • Jess says:

Ok, scratch the maybe… I just ordered them. :) I’ve REALLY been needing some shorts. Thanks for the discount code and advice!! Don’t know what I’d do without my style guide.

  • JordyBee says:

senpuki – Great Q! I think you can absolutely create your own cut-offs from jeans, especially if they fit a little looser. It’s hard to get the frayed effect, so I would just pick a length that works for you and cut them about two inches longer. Then I would fold the cuff up. I’m planning to try it with some of mine soon.

Nichelle – Someone has a bday coming up though, right?

Jules – Wow, I’m flattered! I’ll add you to mine too! I usually don’t jump on the bandwagon for celeb-obsessions, but after I got my first pair of Siwy’s, I understood what all the fuss was about. Besides – Nicole, Sienna, Kate Moss and Rachel Bilson all have pretty awesome style if you asked me.

Jess – Congrats! They are going to be super sexy on you for your Mexico get-a-way! Can’t wait!

  • Nichelle says:

Haha yes I do! Which reminds me, don’t plan anything May 30th!

  • Jenny DB says:

hey jordana- do you know where i could try these on in a store before paying 100+ online? thanks for the post and the discount code!

  • jesspgh says:

I am envious of your summery glow! Until I find a way to get one I will be nervous to wear shorts. But I am glad cutoffs are still in this year!

  • eyeliah says:

Oh, I like the larger size idea, will try it out.

  • JordyBee says:

    Nichelle – Saved!

Jenny DB – You could try on mine to see what you think? I don’t know of anywhere that carries them in Seattle. Jeanette, the owner, is super cool though…so if for some reason you wanted to switch sizes, she’d take care of you.

jesspgh – Haha…these pics were taken last summer, but thank you. It’s not quite shorts season in Seattle, but we’re getting close. I’m glad they still work too. I think in this time, it’s about how you can modify the styles you’ve worn in past seasons to create new looks – wardrobe reinvention, right?

eyeliah – It SOOOOO helps! It’s just hard to get over the hump of buying sizes that we never want to grow into. Haha!

  • jennifer Young says:

i seriously have every single pair of siwy shorts ever created and they are the best. i always feel sexy in a cool way. i wear mine with low ankle boots and kain tee shirts.

  • dreamsequins says:

I’m so inspired by this post, thanks! I might go ahead and try to DIY some cutoffs from some old jeans. I don’t know if I can part with that much $ for cutoffs…

  • Elizabeth says:

Hey – This is a great post! I have always loved the those sandals. I know you said they were from UO, but could you share the brand? Thanks!

  • sarah says:

wow! i love this post. I hate my legs but jeans get so hot in the summer i was tempted to try out shorts. I found some similar longer ones on http://www.republic.com which are made by a brand called crafted, which are quite slim, so i intend to take your advice and have a nice up. Thank you! :D great post! x

  • JordyBee says:

Jennifer Young – I’m jealous! I love them with ankle boots too. It gives them a new edge for this season.

    Jillian – Thanks love!

alixrose – So glad you like it! These shorts would be awesome on you!

dreamsequins – I’m thinking about DIYing some too. Not frayed, but the cuffed cut-off look. I like it!

Elizabeth – I’ll check tonight and get back to you! It’s been so long, I can’t even remember. They might be Minnetonka.

sarah – The link was broken…I’ll try to look it up later. Let me know how they work out for you. Thanks!

I love denim shorts. Another good place to check out is American Eagle Outfitters. Theirs are usually pretty conservative in length and they fit great! I don’t know if they’ve come out with them this year yet, but I bought three cute pairs last summer.
