AMSB Challenge #3: Hot Pink Mini
It’s here - challenge number three for America’s Most Stylish Blogger! This week, Bluefly and StyleList tasked us with styling a stretchy hot pink mini skirt by Necessary Objects. It’s not the most flattering color and very easy to head the direction of the fabulous Julia Roberts and her not-so-stylish character in Pretty Woman. However, I think adding in something afforable and versatile (with a color that pushes the boundaries) made the contest more interesting.

Right off the bat, I thought of the many ways to wear it beyond how it’s supposed to be worn. Those of you who have been following Clutch22 probably aren’t surprised I tried it as a hooded scarf and a one shoulder shawl/crop top, among other things I chose not to include in the slideshow below. I also tried out a number of looks wearing it as it should be and decided to go that direction.
Guest judge, the ever-fabulous Nicole Miller, was a fan of my look, but could have gone without the necklace. I respect that, but definitely wouldn’t change it. I sent some draft photos around to some trusted friends and fellow bloggers and there were mixed opinions about the necklace. Nicole Miller felt my overall look was 60’s and the necklace was too 70’s. I was excited to hear her comment on the blended decades (something I love to do), but I thought it was more early 90’s meets modern prep, given the long cardi.

I thought the skirt as a top look was AWESOME.

What? Miller is totally wrong. I love the necklace. It keeps your look balanced; we’re not just staring at your bottom half. Miller used to sell ties (maybe she still does) with martini glasses and decks of cards and dice on them and race cars and so on. Very cutesy. Hey, we LOVED that shit then! I’m not knocking it. But still…it’s not like I’d expect advice on minimalism from her. Also, I think your hoodie styling is so clever. I never think of wearing things in any way except for how they’re designed.

i also like the skirt as a top, and disagree with miller about the neckace, it’s modern to mix eras …but that’s me, i do it ALL the time!
you look gorgeous!

Love the look! Simple but with a great statement piece. Definitely not Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman!

Even if I didn’t love your style/persona, you’re in my top 3 of the favorite looks this week. Honestly, I like the first photo in the Flickr set the best, with that giant bling necklace - What is that necklace? Where’s it from? I want it! I also just LOVE that photo in general - the lighting, the background, everything. I’m not as big a fan of the rainbow necklace you went with, but I think it’s silly to expect you not to mix decades! Isn’t that the point of fashion, to take your favorite influences from everywhere and make something new?
Aren’t you glad you didn’t make a top or a head wrap, after seeing other people do it? I don’t like it as a top, and I laughed out loud at the person who dyed it. People who proclaim not to like the color pink always have something to prove, IMO.
Also, my anti-spam word was Rent, and we just applied for a new apartment today, so I’m hoping that’s a good sign for me!

I have been following this competition and I love your looks. Personally I love the necklace with this outfit, it ties the whole look together and gave the outfit a new vibe. Great job! I hope you do good in the competition!

For me the necklace makes the whole look! It was the reason I voted for you!
If not the necklace it would be just an ordinary outfit(I don’t really feel 60’s here..) and this piece shows your individuality and personal style.
Go on girl!

I love the first style - pink skirt worn with long cardi! And the necklace gives it a quirky twist! Without the necklace though I would even go as far as call the outfit elegant - not something you say about a pink mini!

You look fantastic! Personally I like the shot of you with the black & crystal necklace (especially since you’re in front of my E train)! I confess after seeing the painfully greasy looking Kelly Cutrone critiquing other’s outfits, when looking like she just rolled out of bed sans bra, I stopped watching your contest videos. She irritated me so much I couldn’t take it! Anyway, I’m back and voted for you, good luck and keep up the fabulous work!
