SPUN Spring 2010: Fanciful & Frilly
Let me kick this off by saying if you’re familiar with this site, you’ll know I’m a huge fan and supporter of SPUN Clothing. Sara Seumae, the Seattle-based designer, has become a very dear friend of mine since we met in 2008 after I reviewed some pieces from her line.

She’s working on the launch of her sping 2010 collection and though I of course, can’t wait to get my hands on it, the story behind it is too good not to share. Maintaining and launching a brand in the middle of a recession might hinder most people, but Sara saw an opportunity and never looked back. Her first two collections (Basics and Classics) are comprised of 100% organic cotton and all pieces were made in the US. The purpose of the two lines was to make them seasonless and flattering in fit with the intent to offer them to customers year round…hence the titles. When it came time to begin developing her third collection, for which she wanted to try something new, she took sustainability and innovation to a new level. This involved reinventing pieces from the Basics collection by subtly adding ruffles, frills and flowers. From there, the Fanciful & Frilly line was born. Brilliant!
To walk you through the transformation from Basic to F&F, take a look at the side-by-side comparisons below.

Above from left: Basic Low V-Neck, F&F Bouquet V-Neck, F&F Ruffle V-Neck (my fav!)

Above from left: Basic Beater Tank, F&F Corsage Tank

Above from left: Basice Cardigan, F&F Cardi Vest

Above from left: Basic Scoop Tee, F&F Poppy Tee (w/ F&F Cardi Vest)
Last but not least, every collection needs an artistic statement piece. Sara created a ruffle vest out of multiple fabrics (even some scraps!) from her Basics collection. The special thing about this piece, the F&F Recycled Ruffle Shell, is that no two will be identical.

What do you think? Have questions for Sara? Feel free to leave a comment and I’ll have her drop by and chime in (or she’ll Tweet at you if that’s your style). Stay tuned for details on when the F&F line will be available. In the meantime, you can get your Basics and Classics fill in the SPUN e-shop or on Manhattanite.
Congrats Sara! I’m so proud of you!

Thank you SO much for all of your support. I’m SO lucky to be surrounded by positive women like you! It is very difficult to run my own business but having friends like you to lean on, makes things easier. xoxo
What a great post about Sara! She is truly an amazing woman and I love being her photographer because she is so passionate about her designs and takes a hands-on approach to everything. I am SO in love with her clothes (I practically live in my beater tank and my Diane wrap dress) and this new collection is wonderfully fun!
Sara’s designs from her first two seasons are cut to flatter most figures…her three quarter length blouse is a god-send when nothing else in the closet seems to fit well. The cotton is so soft and durable; no shrinking or fading to report on the several pieces I have worn often over the past 2 1/2 years. I am excited to wear items from her 3rd line; especially the Poppy Tee…brilliant!
I *love* how basic, yet fabulous all these pieces are… love them all!
your blog is very beautiful and interesting
love

LOVE Sara and LOVE the new line! I went on her website last week and took a look. Definitely going to be purchasing the “poppy tee” and “cardi vest”…and probably more, in the very near future! I’m obsessed with every SPUN piece i own now and have no doubt I’ll be obsessed with the latest additions!
Love the F&F cardi and the ruffle vest in the end. The whole collection seems comfortable and stylish.
Always happy to see a local girl doing well. My favorite is the vest!
What a cute idea – and I love that last vest!
