PostHeaderIcon Mobile Post: To Fall for a Shoe

Let me tell you about my fairy tale shoe experience…Like a lot of shoe obsessed girls, I’ve been on the hunt for Miu Miu Swallow satin platform pumps. They are literally nowhere to be found, not even on eBay! I even called Nordstrom to have them search their stores and no luck. They have the pump version, but it’s a completely different shoe.

All of this changed for me on Saturday afternoon when I dropped in Bergdorf’s for the very first time, went up to level two and saw the mythical shoe on display with a beam of light shining down; choir singing “ah.” It was a 38!!! I asked my new fav SA (aka Sales Associate) if they actually had it before I got my hopes up. He confirmed they did and as expected, it was the last pair. After playing Cinderella to make sure it fit, and it SO did, I noticed some ladies staring at me and whispering about the shoe. Apparently one of them was about to put it on hold for another shopper. Oh @#&*, right? I thought they were going to take them away, but “no way Jose” to the rescue! They are currently kickin’ it in my livingroom like a piece of art on display! Here’s my dilemma – knowing demand for these beauties is high and supply is approaching zero, the entrepreneur in me wants to see how much they might go for on eBay. There are currently none listed and I’m certain people are looking. Poochie of Shoe Daydreams advised me not to sell, “they’re an iconic shoe!” My friend Rickey Bird, who loved to see the bird print as such a hot commodity, said I should at least wear them once before listing them..

I’m completely torn. It’s the first time I’ve invested in designer shoes because I’ve always said I was waiting for the “right pair.” I know I could probably turn a few hundred dollars in profit though. For background, I parted with my, at the time, priceless beanie baby collection during their peak in the 90′s…turning a 1000% return on investment. I was 13 and got a taste of biz early on and has a feeling about these. What should I do?

  • I don’t know if they’re iconic, though they are cute. Frankly, I say wear them a few times (don’t let them get destroyed) and if you’re still debating selling them on eBay, try (but with what you paid as the reserve– this way you don’t HAVE to sell if no one will pay that price)

I say Rickey Bird has the right idea. Wear them once and then list them. You will get a great turnover on your investment (accountant coming out in me. :) )

They are a beautiful shoe though.

If you need some dough, sell ‘em. If you’re a collector, keep ‘em. How long would these be in demand?

  • carly says:

These are super cute! Having your first piece in your closet could never be marked with a price tag! Though something tells me its not about the shoe, to sell or not to sell, its more about your curiousity of supply and demand for the shoe and how far would a shoenista go to buy these from you on Ebay. Tough decision. They are super cute and can be worn glammed or casual! Great Find Jor!

If they’re truly your dream shoes I would say it’s measuring the money vs. the devastation you would feel to see someone else rocking them. That’s hilarious that you profited from beanie babies, good job!

  • DWJ says:

Think about how you felt when you saw them and they had them in your size. Do you really want to give them away? They’ll be a classic shoe forever, keep them!

  • Janine says:

I would weigh the money with how often you’d actually wear them. Then again, is it more for the thrill of selling them for profit or the cash itself?

  • jennine says:

you know, i like the idea of wearing them a few times… like at the office, or someplace indoors (don’t wear them outside). if you love them, keep them. iconic or not, a good shoe is hard to find.

  • Elea Carey says:

I honestly don’t know what the *&^% I’d do! You certainly have to wear them once or twice — maybe then you’ll know whether you want to keep them, or to have rented them!

  • WendyB says:

When you have a good shoe, keep it! What are you going to do on eBay…make a little bit of money on it that you’d use to buy a not-so-exciting shoe? I’d rather wear the exciting ones!

  • I like the symbolism for the dove images in the shoes. Very symbolic for soaring.

  • I’m in awe of your entrepreneur skills at 13! I don’t even have that at 42! Which will explain why I say keep them if you love them. There’s nothing like a special piece in your closet you can rely on for great occasions. Or just to wear whenever you want!

  • jesspgh says:

Oh man. I vote keep and wear a few times… if you are less in love after wearing, sell on ebay then. You will SURELY at least get the retail price back because they are so rare and so highly desired.

I am envious, myself. They were my favorite print and my favorite colorway of the already much-lauded collection!

  • MacKenzie says:

I love them, and I was looking for them on eBay too, thought I don’t have the $$ at the moment to do anything if I found them :(

I was just wondering… How much were they?

  • No matter what brand or price, you have to love it right? DO you love it now that it’s at home?

Sometimes, it may be love, sometimes it may be because you thought you loved it.
I saw a Burberry bag at the Regent St. Boutique and lusted after it. It went on sale at the boutique and disappeared. I eventually found it in East London at the outlet and brought it home. I didn’t love it as much that night and went back and found this awesome Burberry prorsum cross body I loved more.

    Totally your call!
