Is it socially acceptable to give a Groupon printout as a Valentine’s Day gift?
Mario wants to know. Not really, but a friend of mine asked this on Facebook today and I thought it’d be interesting to open it up to others. If you recall my post over the holidays about the top 10 gifts a guy should never by a girl, every gift sends a message. When it comes to women, sometimes it doesn’t matter how pure a guy’s intentions are. SO…what do you think?

I haven’t decided on my answer for this yet. Convince away…and I’ll make sure to pass on your wisdom to Matt, the person who asked. Oh and those of you “it depends” peeps – please be specific.

I would say “depends” but I’ll clarify.
First, I think it needs to be in a relationship where this level of casual is established and is okay. Secondly, I think you need to “dress it up” a bit – you shouldn’t just print it out and say Here you go! It needs to go in a card or something. Even better, write in the card what you got or add a tchotchke to go with it.
Eventually you are going to be giving this person a piece of paper where you got a deal so be wise. The best bet is to pick something you can do together and then you hand over the Groupon discretely. Personally I’ve been married for almost 14 years so I wouldn’t care. If it was our first date I probably would feel differently.
No – It’s valentine’s day. show some effort guys!
Absolutely not… It would make me feel like I was undeserving a full priced gift. It’s like leaving the sale tag on an item that was purchased. I watched a couple out on a first date and the guy pulled out a Groupon to pay for dinner. I was appalled and so was his date.
Boyfriend to girlfriend (or vice-versa)? Never. But it can be a fun little gesture between friends
